The construction of the nesting platform for the birds near Beloslav has been completed
In the last days of 2023, we have completed the construction of the bird nesting platform in the Yatata Protected Area near Beloslav. Although small in size (only 154 ha) Yatata is well-known for the rich variety of bird species during every season. 208 birds species have been observed on its territory, 89 of which are identified as Species of European Conservation Concern. Despite this the area offers limited nesting opportunities for some of the waterfowls such as Common tern, Black-winged stilt, etc, which nesting territories are too peculiar. These species have been observed during migration, but they don’t nest there or breed irregularly and in small numbers in Yatata and in the neighbouring larger protected area Varnensko-Beloslavko ezero. The artificial nesting platforms are key facilities with a proven effect on attracting birds and increasing their population in certain areas. In Bulgaria a good example are the wet areas near Burgas, where there are several similar habitats. We hope that during the nesting season birds will start using the new platform. In the coming months we are planning the construction of the second platform in the Western area of the Beloslav lake. This activity is part of the project Life for Lake Varna (LIFE19 NAT/BG000839), co-financed by the European Union under the LIFE Programme, in which BSPB is partnering with the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company.   We thank all our volunteers and supporters for their help in constructing the platform.
